Day 2 - Splendour of Venice - Walking Tour

This morning enjoy a walking tour of Venice with your expert local guide to include a visit to several of the most famous landmarks of the city.

One of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Venice, St. Mark’s Basilica was once the Doge’s chapel. It is also a mausoleum for St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice who was martyred by the Turks in Alexandria, Egypt. As you enter the Basilica, marvel at the golden mosaics depicting the life of the saint, the Old and New Testaments, the life of Jesus and His Resurrection. St. Mark’s Square is in fact not a square at all, rather it is a trapezoid whose extensive sides flare out giving it the appearance of being even more spacious. Two wings occupy the sides of the square over the arcades and are known as the old (vecchie) and new (nuove). Filled with cafés and people, it is a gracious square, once declared by Napoleon to be the “world’s greatest drawing room.”

The Doges’ Palace was the seat of the main government departments, the residence of the Doge, from where the Venetian Republic was ruled. Lavish frescoes, graceful staircases and gilded stucco work, reveal the glory and opulence of this period. End your tour back at the Ducal Palace where you can admire the Bridge of Sights made of white limestone with stone-barred windows. It passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. Famous inmate Casanova made a dramatic escape across the rooftop in 1756.

The afternoon is at leisure to wander through one of Venice’s fine museums, search a street lined with shops for something special in the latest Italian fashion, or stroll through a quiet piazza and absorb the softer every day charms of Venice.

Day 3 - Lagoon Islands Private Boat Tour - Murano & Burano

Today you will be met by your local English-speaking guide for an excursion by private motor-boat to explore the Lagoon Islands of Murano and Burano.

Venice lies in the centre of a vast lagoon that stretches for about 30 miles from north to south, studded by numerous small islands, mostly deserted. This amazing environment is what drove the Venetians to establish their city here, a perfectly secure and inaccessible little world. Enjoy the beauty of a ride across the waters of the lagoon. Visit Burano, a quaint and colourful fishermen's island famous for its lace-making traditions and charming architecture. Next visit the island of Murano, where glass has been made for over 700 years and where you can see the age-old techniques of glass blowing still in use today.
