The villa was designed as a monument to power and excess, its construction involved demolishing a monastery and diverting an entire river to feed the 80 tumbling fountains in the gardens. The history of the Cardinal and the Villa are all intertwined with the following centuries' history of Italy. Whilst the interior is hugely impressive, the stupendous gardens are a phenomenal example of Italianate gardens, much copied in noble and regal palaces across Europe. Today you will enjoy a 4 hour sightseeing tour with your private vehicle and Spanish-speaking guide. Start your exploration of ancient Rome on Capitoline Hill at the museum considered one of the oldest in the world, the Capitoline Museum; originally founded by Pope Sixtus IV in 1471. The Capitoline Hill, throughout the centuries, has always been a seat of religious or political power, thus making it the most important of the “seven hills” of Rome. On this hill existed the most important temple in town, dedicated to Jupiter, the king of the gods, built by the Etruscans in the sixth century B.C.

See the magnificent bronze equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius at the Campidoglio Square and, nearby, the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter. Visit the two buildings of the museums; Palazzo dei Conservatori, where you can view splendid frescoes portraying the history of Rome and the Pinacoteca (Picture gallery) and Palazzo Nuovo, where you can view collections of great ancient sculptures once belonging to the great noble families of the past. It is made by inserting small marble tiles to create a composition like a painting. At the beginning it consisted of simple black and white geometrical designs used to decorate the floors. Then it became rich in a variety of themes, colours and design and was used to decorate walls as well.

Visit the Church of San Clemente which provides an opportunity to ‘travel back’ through three layers of history and has splendid 12th century mosaics and frescoes. Also visit the Church of Santi Quattro Coronati with its famous Chapel of St Sylvester totally frescoed with the legend of the conversion of Constantine.
