Bargains in Berlin
Far from the pomposity of Paris, the ruins of Ancient Rome and the modern art of Madrid, Berlin can comfortably throw its hat into the ring and lay claim to the title of coolest European capital. It certainly has its fair share of history - echoes of the past jump out from the imperial palaces, the enduring relics of war and the Holocaust, the post-war checkpoints and the fallen Berlin Wall. But today the city is not only the trendsetter for Germany, it has also reinvented itself as the slick and vibrant trailblazer for European modernity, leading the way in energetic ventures from 24-hour parties to cutting-edge architecture and anything in between.
2019 sees it mark the centenary of one of its former innovative movements in art and design. The influential Bauhaus school was born 100 years ago and called Berlin its home in its final years, before the Nazi regime forced its closure. Legacies of the movement can be found in the city's architecture today, such as the alluring Bauhaus-Archiv building, and this is the best place to join in with the celebrations that kick off here in January. International venues, such as the HKW (House of World Cultures), will be featuring special exhibits, and the town of Dessau, within driving distance, will mark the occasion by opening a large and permanent museum dedicated entirely to Bauhaus.
Visitors will be best placed to get involved from the comfort of the central Hotel Adlon Kempinski. The perfect blend of luxury, history and 21st-century sophistication, this elegant building is based near to the shops of Friedrichstrasse and the remarkable exhibits found on Museum Island. It lies so deep into the heart of the capital that you even find yourself staring up at the legendary Brandenburg Gate as you tuck into your breakfast!
