Day 2 - Drive to Mto wa Mbu Village

After breakfast, you will drive to Mto wa Mbu village in your private vehicle which lies at the foot of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment. Here you will have your first walk of the safari – you will set off through the village on foot. This is a lovely way to gain a proper introduction to village life in an un-orchestrated and authentic way. You will first stop to visit the rice paddies before winding down the small tracks between the banana plantations. Along the way your guide will stop and explain the variety of uses they have for the banana plant - from roofing their homes to brewing the local beer (which you are invited to try during the trip).

From the village you will begin to ascend the Great Rift Valley wall through the forest. On the way you may see a variety of monkeys that call the forest home and a huge amount of birdlife. Your guide will also point out various plants, fruits and flowers on the way and give you an introduction into the secrets of the forest.

You will be met by your driver at the top of the escarpment and drive onto camp in time for a spectacular sundowner.

Overnight: Highlands Ngorongoro

Day 3 - Ngorongoro Crater

Today set out for a full day’s game drive in the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. You will take a picnic lunch with you to maximize your time in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a deep, volcanic crater and the largest unbroken caldera in the world. About 20 kilometers (12 miles) across, 600 meters (1,969 feet) deep and 300 square kilometers (186 square miles) in area, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder. Within the crater rim large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater's ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.

Overnight: Highlands Ngorongoro

Day 4 - Empakaai Crater

After breakfast, lace-up your hiking boots and trek down to the floor of the Empakaai Crater and marvel at the abundance of life and beauty. The main attraction is the turquoise lake, a haven for water birds, flamingos, buffalo and blue monkeys. You can explore the steep-sided crater which is covered in forest and home to a vast array of wildlife and beautiful birds. Whilst walking through the crater you may come across some Masai herding their cows – your guide can introduce you and this is a great way to catch a glimpse into the daily lives of this ancient tribe.

You will be back at the lodge in time for lunch and have the afternoon to relax and enjoy the facilities whilst taking in the superb view.

Day 5 - Fly to Serengeti National Park

Today, you fly to the Serengeti National Park and meet with your walking crew. The area which you are walking through is inside the wilderness and rhino protection zones where few others are allowed. You have a vast, untouched wilderness to explore in solitude. These remote areas mainly consist of gentle rolling hills with small streams, springs in the valleys and small grassland plains surrounded by sparse acacia forests. Big granite outcrops called kopjes give the area a great feel and look.

The only roads that exist into these areas are access roads to the camp sites. Since there are no permanent accommodation facilities in the walking zones a small, lightweight camp is perfect. The camp consists of three-man dome style tents which are easy to set-up with plenty of floor space for 2 people. It is great for a good nights rest in a remote area. You sleep on comfy four-inch mattress on a bed frame and the bedding is cotton covered duvets and cotton sheets. The bathroom is a small distance behind the tent. Toilets are shallow pit latrines with safari bucket showers. This allows you to get even closer to the nature in this wonderfully remote area.

Overnight: Wayo Green Camp

Meal Plan: B,L,D

Day 6 - Walk through the Serengeti

Your day will start with a light breakfast to get you walking around 06:30. The camp cook will prepare a packed breakfast that will be enjoyed on a rock or next to a stream somewhere out in the vast Serengeti plains. Your guide will aim to have you back in camp before it gets too hot; for a sit-down lunch under the branches of a beautiful tree. Afternoons are generally spent like the animals with eyes closed in a shady place. As the day cools down you set off on a shorter afternoon walk to enjoy the African sunset.

Being an area of varied eco-zones and vegetation types, the Serengeti is home to treasure trove of Africa's mammals and a huge variety of birds, reptiles and insects. There is a large amount of resident wildlife due to permanent springs and you will encounter everything from the smallest insect to large herbivorous plains game whilst you are exploring the area – a truly magical experience.

Day 7 - Fly to the Masai Mara National Reserve

Today, you will fly to the Masai Mara National Reserve accessing Kenya through the Isebania border post. Upon arrival you will be met by a Sanctuary Olonana representative and transferred to the lodge.

Sumptuous king-sized beds, with overhead fans and a daybed on the deck invite you to relax inside or out, while the sprawling lower lounge area offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Three of the new suites feature an extra bedroom located off the open plan bathroom, perfect for families with young children. The unfaltering attention to detail extends to fully stocked mini-fridges, specially commissioned African art and glamorous en suites. You can also hike up the Siria Escarpment which rises majestically up behind the lodge and forms the north western border of the Masai Mara.

The jewel in Africa's crown, Maasai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. Her 1,510 square kilometers (583 square miles) of open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers create an eco-system which supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. The western border of the park is the spectacular Siria Escarpment, and together with the acacia dotted plains, creates scenery of stunning beauty. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and, if lucky, you may also find rhino.

Day 10 - Fly to Loita Hills

The Loita Maasai who lead you on these trails are reputed to be the most conservative of this tribe, dedicated to their traditions, ceremonies and rites of passage.
