Itinerary
Day 1 - Meidoum pyramid
Visit Meidoum pyramid. The unusual Pyramid of Maidum, also called the Seila or Silah Pyramid was originally a seven-stepped pyramid and was later enlarged to have eight steps. Eventually the steps were filled in, and a smooth outer facing turned it into a true pyramid, although that casing has now collapsed, and the debris surrounds the base of the main structure.
Although it is uncertain when this occurred, some believe it was the cause for the change in the angle of the Bent Pyramid. It stands spectacularly on the very edge of the desert and is the only structure in the vicinity. The Maidum Pyramid is thought to have been started by Huni, the last ruler of the 3rd Dynasty, and then completed by his son, Sneferu in the 4th Dynasty.
The Seven Water Wheels: The locals are particularly proud of their water-wheels, first introduced by the Ptolemies and used now as the official symbol of Fayoum province. There are over 200 to see in the region.
Besides the 4 large ones behind the tourist office on the main Gomhouria st., the most famous are the series of seven water wheels, about 3 km along Bahr Sinnuris.

Lake Qarun (215 Km2) remains Egypt's largest salt water lake. It has remained an agriculture center, well known for it's fruits, vegetables and chickens.
The worlds first dam was probably built here in order to control the Nile floods into the area.
Bird life still abounds around Lake Qaroun, bordered by semi-nomadic Bedouin settlements and fishing villages. Here, on the edge of the desert, you can sail, windsurf, swim and fish.
Fayoum’s picturesque arts center specializing in pottery handcrafts. Chance to visit the Art Center in Tunis Village: In 1962, the famous poet Sayed Hegab with his Swiss wife Evelynne came to the village.
They fell in love with the place, quickly purchased land to build a house and the pottery workshop which taught generations of locals a refinement of their art, propelling their products to national celebration.
Many famous writers, intellectuals, artists, and architects came and purchased houses in it, thus was born the intellectual community that is now Tunis. It is a great chance to see the young artists making their wares and purchase examples of their craft.
