Itinerary
Experience the magic of a Borobudur sunrise. Overlooking lush green plains in Central Java, the gray volcanic stone complex is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Ancient texts date the structure's inauguration to AD 824, although the entire complex took almost 100 years to complete. Climb to the sixth and highest tier of the temple to witness the sunrise with views of Merapi Mountain and the surrounding countryside while learning about Buddhist history from your guide. Stop by a local market to admire locally grown fruits, vegetables and agricultural products before returning to your hotel for breakfast.
In the late morning, explore more of Borobudur's sacred historical sites. Visit Mendut temple, which pre-dates Borobudur and contains beautiful reliefs of Bodhisattva with eight different hand gestures. Scenes from Buddhist literature and parables of Indian morality adorn the walls and a rare Buddha statue seated on a European chair can be seen inside the temple. Continue to Pawon temple, which lies hidden amongst local houses. Smaller than Mendut, this rectangular structure with terraced roofs was used as a place to store the Vajranala, the sacred weapons of King Indra in Indian mythology.
