Vietnam's World-Heritage Bays: A Look at Ha Long and Lan Ha's Shared and Unique Features
Vietnam's coastal landscape is blessed with breathtaking natural wonders, and among the most captivating are Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay. These two enchanting destinations are in close proximity, yet each possesses distinct characteristics. Halong Bay stands out as a globally renowned natural wonder while Lan Ha Bay possesses a beauty that still lacks worldwide recognition and is therefore a bit less busy. In this article, we dissect the similarities and differences of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, helping you make an informed decision on which Vietnamese gem to explore.
Similarities
Limestone Karsts
Both Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay boast stunning limestone karsts that rise dramatically from the emerald waters. These natural formations have been shaped over millions of years, creating a captivating seascape that is unlike any other in the world. Cruising through either bay is a visual feast, with thousands of karsts dotting the horizon.
Activities
Exploring the bays by boat or kayak is a popular activity in both Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay. Visitors spend days and nights on traditional or modern overnight cruisers, navigate the calm waters, explore the caves and get up close to the karsts. Adventurers can paddle through hidden lagoons and caves, go cycling and immerse themselves in the culture of local villages.
Weather and Climate
Both Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay have tropical monsoon climates, resulting in hot and humid summers as well as cold and dry winters. They have similar year-round averages, with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68 °F) to 30°C (86°F). The weather in both bays can be cool and clear from September to November. It can be foggy from December to March, giving the bay a more enigmatic appearance. While June through August might be unpredictable due to the monsoon season, April and May provide sunshine and a refreshing breeze.
Differences
Landscape
Ha Long Bay stands out with its vast expanse and a greater number of islands compared to Lan Ha Bay. On the other hand, Lan Ha Bay's islands are rich in greenery and less crowded compared to Ha Long. Another differentiating factor between the two bays lies in their caverns. The caves in Ha Long Bay, adorned with stunning stalactites, have a history dating back millions of years and are accompanied by legends. Ha Long Bay boasts a higher quantity of caves, notably including Sung Sot Cave, Thien Cung, Trinh Nu Caves, and Dau Go Cave. Conversely, Lan Ha Bay's caves are primarily concentrated around Cat Ba Island and are predominantly underwater caverns. Among its renowned caverns are the Dark and Light Cave and Quan Y Cave.
Crowd and Tourism
Ha Long Bay attracts a larger number of tourists compared to Lan Ha Bay and sees higher numbers of package tourists. On the other hand, Lan Ha Bay, though gaining popularity, remains relatively quieter, offering a more serene and intimate experience with nature.
Environmental Preservation
Due to its popularity, Ha Long Bay has faced challenges in preserving its environment. In recent years, efforts have been made to combat pollution and manage tourism sustainably. Lan Ha Bay benefits from being less visited and has managed to maintain its natural beauty and ecological balance.
Accessibility
Both Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay are easily accessible from Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city. From Hanoi, it is a pleasant 2-hour drive on the new highway or a 1-hour helicopter or seaplane transfer to Ha Long City and Tuan Chau Harbour.
Travelers cruising in Ha Long Bay will embark their cruise boats directly from Tuan Chau Harbor, while those cruising in Lan Ha Bay will take a tender boat for a short distance from Tuan Chau Harbor to embark their cruise boat anchored in Lan Ha Bay. The slightly more remote location of Lan Ha Bay contributes to its lesser-known status.
Whether you are seeking an immersive experience in nature or embracing the vibrancy of a popular tourist destination, both Ha Long and Lan Ha Bays promise unforgettable memories of Vietnam's remarkable beauty and local life on the sea. Vietnam's Luxury Tourism: Insider Insights from Akorn Vietnam's Country Manager
Vietnam's luxury tourism has experienced significant growth over the years, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world. We sat down with Akorn's Country Manager for Vietnam, Rob Rankin, who brings nearly two decades of experience in the luxury travel sector and an in-depth knowledge of tourism in Southeast Asia. In this Q&A session, we talk about the future of luxury travel and how Akorn Vietnam continues to be at the forefront of providing high-end experiences, luxury accommodations, fine dining and exclusive encounters to our ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients.
Q: How long have you been living in Vietnam, and can you describe how luxury tourism has evolved through the years?
A: I am grateful to have called Ho Chi Minh City my home for almost 20 years now. Time flies!
Back when I moved here in the mid-2000s, the concept of “Luxury Travel” in Vietnam was very immature. Luxury travel in Vietnam simply meant a 5-star hotel and maybe a fancy restaurant meal, and there were only a handful of international 5-star hotels and high-end restaurants suitable for foreign travelers.
Over time, more 5-star brands entered the market. Luxury consortiums like Virtuoso recognized a few properties and selected DMCs like Akorn Vietnam, allowing the concept of real luxury travel to take shape.
As the travel industry grew rapidly in Vietnam throughout the 2000s up until COVID, we have quickly adapted and worked consistently to develop products and services for the luxury and UHNW traveler.
Q: What are the key trends in luxury travel at the moment?
A: Our clients want to disengage from the routines and stresses of home or business, and connect with new people, cultures and ideas. The price and value for money is important, but developing the travel experience that meets their expectations and specific requirements is more important. UHNW travelers often have a strict schedule and specific demands, and at the moment, we see private aircraft charter as a growing trend. In the past, we had to bring in private aircrafts from Hong Kong or Singapore, but now we have a solid availability of private jets based locally and the good news is that Akorn Vietnam has access to helicopters in all areas of the country. Wellness and adventure are trending, including cycling. The MICHELIN Restaurant Guide also recently launched in Vietnam this year, so we are already seeing an uptick in culinary trends.
Q: How do you see Akorn Vietnam pushing the boundaries and moving forward in providing luxury travel experiences to UHNW clients?
A: Luxury travel for UHNW is not just about luxury hotels, fancy restaurants or luxury cars. These are all elements of a luxury trip, but not the whole. Everyone can sell “luxury” hardware. UHNW luxury travel experiences need to prioritize service, ultra-personalized attention to detail, authenticity, exclusivity and privacy. These are my key priorities in Akorn Vietnam. We work towards these goals by developing authentic, insider-access experiences. From cuisine to culture or art to architecture, our exclusive connections take our clients beyond the guidebook and behind the scenes, into local homes, visiting key sites privately and into the heart of authentic Vietnam. We partner with only the best guides. Our experienced, handpicked guides reveal a local's daily life, informed by decades — if not a lifetime — of firsthand experience. Akorn Vietnam’s Destination Specialists approach every new request with a blank page. We work as consultants, not simply order-takers, and we ask a lot of questions during the process. It’s important that we have all the specific details as much as possible, in order to get the experience right.
